The Department of French Language is one of the scientific departments of the Faculty of Arts / Al-Asaba University of Gharyan was opened in the academic year 2008/2009 

The Department of French Language and Literature looks forward to developing the teaching and learning of the French language and excellence in the field of teaching and scientific research among educated individuals, as well as seeking to raise the efficiency of the student in the French language, prepare him to meet the needs of the local community, and continue his postgraduate studies by providing him with the necessary skills and knowledge. Which achieves a comprehensive and sustainable human community development for the Libyan society to communicate with the French-speaking Francophone countries in order to learn about the cultures of these societies and gain the trust and service of society in line with the developments of the times.

The department seeks to prepare scientifically and professionally qualified human cadres in the field of French language and translation capable of competing in the local and global labor market and the field of scientific research. The department also aims to familiarize yourself with French culture and openness to it and other cultures and to introduce modern trends in the study of French language and literature and keep pace with the scientific movement.

At the professional level, the department provides students with linguistic, cultural and vocational skills that meet the needs of the labor market. Therefore, the fields of study in the department vary between linguistics, translation, literature and civilization.

1. Learn about the culture and literature of French-speaking communities and enhance cultural communication with them and transfer what is appropriate to the local culture
2.  Provide students with comprehensive knowledge of French language, literature and linguistics.
3.  Acquire the basic skills necessary to master the French language and use it in writing and up-to-date in different and varied situations.
4.  Develop students' linguistic and communication skills by employing theoretical and technical means to teach listening, speaking, reading and writing.
5. Study the literature of the French language with its multiple disciplines in different historical stages and prepare the student to criticize and analyze literary texts. 
6.  Contribute to the preparation of qualified competencies in the field of French language and literature to work in the educational, diplomatic, media and tourism fields in the public and private sectors.
7. Work on the formation of learners, researchers and translators capable of establishing the link between their mother tongue and the language of specialization.
8. Providing the opportunity for students to complete postgraduate studies, whether in Libyan universities, French universities or universities of French-speaking countries.
